Board Member
Major General (Ret.) Elder Granger, M.D. brings decades of military, healthcare, executive leadership, and governance experience to New Horizons for Children. He served 37 years in the U.S. Army, beginning his career as a combat medic and ultimately retiring as a Major General after serving in some of the Military Health System’s most senior leadership positions.
Before retiring from the Army in 2009, Dr. Granger served as Deputy Director and Program Executive Officer of the TRICARE Management Activity within the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. In that role, he served as a principal advisor on Department of Defense health policy and performance and oversaw the acquisition, operation, and integration of TRICARE’s managed care program. He led a staff of approximately 1,800 and helped direct a multibillion-dollar Defense Health Program serving more than nine million service members, retirees, and family members worldwide.
Earlier in his military career, Dr. Granger served in senior command and medical leadership roles throughout the United States and Europe. He commanded the 44th Medical Command and served as Command Surgeon for Multinational Corps Iraq, where he helped lead one of the largest U.S. and multinational battlefield health systems of the modern era. His assignments also included leadership of regional medical commands, military hospitals, and health services supporting soldiers and families across multiple locations. Following his military retirement, Dr. Granger founded THE 5Ps, LLC, a healthcare, education, and leadership consulting organization. He has continued to advise organizations on healthcare strategy, leadership, governance, quality, compliance, risk management, and organizational performance. He has also served on numerous corporate, healthcare, and university boards and brings extensive experience in board governance and executive oversight.
Dr. Granger earned his Bachelor of Science from Arkansas State University and his medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He completed residency training in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology-oncology at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. He is board-certified in internal medicine and hematology-oncology and has earned additional certifications in physician leadership, healthcare quality, compliance, and governance.
Throughout his career, Dr. Granger has received numerous military and professional honors, including the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. He and his wife, Brenda, live in Colorado.
